Sample the exquisite food that France is famous for:  artful preparation and presentation of food and subtle varieties of wine.

In the summer especially, folk festivals and musical performances abound, giving an insight into local traditions. In each small area, or "pays" that you explore, you'll discover the unique customs and characteristics of that particular locale - resulting from its geographic position and historical experience. Each has its own regional cuisine, folk music, traditional costumes, and even "patois" or manner of speech distinctive to that region.

Throughout France the people are proud of the refinements of their language and traditions. Each region has  a distinct flavor, in fact, nuanced over time by the influence of other nearby cultures.

(As such, France might be considered  a "microcosm"  of Western Europe.)

Indeed, many of the events that have shaped the development of Western Civilization have occurred on French soil.

Throughout the countryside are vestiges of HISTORY: ...cave drawings; monoliths from
pre-history; fortresses, abbeys and cathedrals from medieval times; palatial chateaux from the
Renaissance period; trenches and beachheads from the 20th century, and all manner of others from periods in between, giving testimony to the varied priorities and experiences of the past.
